Bid on a Rose Chan aka Charity Queen tribute Silent Auction
KUALA LUMPUR – Let’s admit it. 2021 has been challenging for many of us. If the pandemic weren’t exactly over by now, then at least the worst of it would be. Amidst the avalanche of needs, one particular group of people feels most isolated – the elderly citizens of our communities. Inspired by the late Rose Chan, known as “Charity Queen”, My Bartender’s Handshake will be collaborating with Set the Tables, supported by The Back Ground and Carlsberg to raise money for a good cause on the 10th of February.
Who was Rose Chan, you may ask? In the roaring 1950s, Rose Chan was the first burlesque dancer in Malaysia, known for her daring strip tease performances that got the audience go wild/hysterical. Starting as a cabaret dancer, the accidental snapping of her bra during one of her shows at Majestic Theatre in Ipoh made her a sensation instantly. A star was born, and Rose Chan established herself as the top burlesque queen throughout Malaysia and Singapore in the 1950s and 60s. However, she has a big heart for the needy, unknown to many. Throughout her career and in the later years of her life, she donated generously to charities for children, disabled, senior citizens and even education – the Nanyang University endowment fund.
Happening at The Back Ground, this Charity Queen event is a tribute to Rose Chan. An evening of raising money for good causes through a silent auction, experiential workshops and bartender guest shift. In addition, a percentage of the sales from The Back Ground dine-ins will also be donated. All donations will go to Grace Home Klang, a non-profit charitable organization that provides shelter to the homeless and destitute women.

A series of artwork, each representing a tribute to Rose Chan, featuring special digital artwork by SuYin Dures X JRDoodles, a painting by Maggie Tan, MTMT Studios and many more.
Experiential Workshops, a trip to Carlsberg brewery and more!
Outsiders Bikes will be donating a one-on-one 2.5 hours Basic Bike Care course. Designed for beginners, this course aims to give a better understanding of the working parts of your bike, retail experience of bike purchase, cleaning and repair processes.
Chu by Fifty Tales, the latest edition to The Back Ground, is a build-your-own bowl concept, inspired by the good old days where you could choose what part of the meat you want at a pork noodle stall. They will be donating two 5-Courses Tasting Menu dining experiences.
Our sponsor, Carlsberg is giving away a trip to the Carlsberg brewery for 30 lucky donors, which includes endless servings of beer tasting and a buffet spead.
Ristic Apothecary is donating a gift basket filled with organic handmade body care products.
Karl Too, owner of Happy Stan is donating Cocktail 101 workshop for two for anyone looking to be a bartender for a night.
fono,an independent and versatile art space exploring culture through music and unifying communities through sound will be donating 3 customized Introductory DJ Classes to get your passion off the ground.
JRSkates will be giving 2 skateboard workshops, applicable for either adults or kids.
Lynda Chean, founder of Pink Tattoo will be donating a tattoo. The quirkier the client’s ideas, the better!
DH Paper Art will be commissioning a special Rose Chan paper artwork.

We are delighted to have Vee from the newly opened Puzzle Bar, Damansara Utama to take over The REX Bar for the night.
Music
A newcomer but feisty music selector Li Yi is an eternal disciple of soulful grooves – dropping tunes that are made for dancing or loving or both – interweaving house, techno and disco with some sprinkles of funk and cantopop just to have that extra pizzazz for your evening.
