28 April 2022 – Hong Kong’s Oaxacan-inspired bar, Coa, once again claimed the top spot at the seventh edition of Asia’s 50 Best Bars during a live ceremony in Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok. The ceremony was held in front of a live audience of industry leaders, mixologists, brand ambassadors, and cocktail enthusiasts. This year, the bar features 16 cities across Asia, and 14 new entries.
“We could not be happier that Asia’s 50 Best Bars returns to a live event format this year and that the community can experience much-needed connection and conviviality once again. Asia’s bars have shown remarkable resilience and growth in spite of the challenges of the past two years, and we continue to be proud to celebrate the talent and creativity on display in bars all across Asia. Congratulations to Jay Khan and the team at Coa for holding onto their top position after another tumultuous year for Hong Kong. Coa’s winning cocktail of an Agave-spirits- forward menu, expertly-crafted menu and a complete understanding of the guest experience has again proven to strike a winning chord with our voting Academy.” says Mark Sansom, Content Director for Asia’s 50 Best Bars.
Singapore
Singapore scored big, with 11 positions on the list. Jigger & Pony (No.2) is named The Best Bar in Singapore for the second year in a row and MO Bar at No.8 is the Nikka Highest Climber with an impressive 37 position leap. They are joined by eight other venues from the island, including Manhattan (No.9), Republic (No. 12), No Sleep Club (No.15), Atlas (No. 23), Tippling Club (No. 27), Sago House (No. 31), Nutmeg & Clove (No. 36), Analogue (No. 37) and 28 Hong Kong Street (No. 49). Singapore was recognised with other awards. The Roku Industry Icon went to Nutmeg & Clove’s Colin Chia for his role in nurturing Singapore’s next generation of bartenders.
Bangkok
Thailand secures five spots in the 2022 list with newcomer BKK Social Club leading the pack at No.10. Helmed by eminent bar personality Philip Bischoff, BKK Social Club was also crowned the best bar in Thailand and the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award. The rest of the list from Bangkok consists of Tropic City (No.17), Vesper (No.19), newcomer Asia Today at No.43 and The Bamboo Bar at No.46.
Kuala Lumpur
Bar Trigona at No.29 wins The Best Bar in Malaysia as well as the Siete Misterios Best Cocktail Menu. The bar at the Four Seasons in Kuala Lumpur uses Malaysian produce as a mainstay, from the wild turmeric harvested in Pahang, raw honey from the eponymous Trigona hives and tropical fruits from a Bangi organic farm. Having settled into a new location in 2021, Kuala Lumpur’s revered rum bar, Junglebird remains a roaring success, moving up two places to No.35.
Asia’s 50 Best also releases the 51-100 honorary list, which includes bars from 24 different cities across Asia, bringing the spotlight to even more bars in the region.
